Aluminum or Plastic: What a Hub's Body Actually Does
Aluminum or plastic: the hub body is a thermal component, not a finish. What the shell actually does for heat, durability and price, and when each material is right.

Hub listings treat the body as a style choice: aluminum for the premium shelf, plastic for the budget one. Engineering disagrees. The body of a hub is a thermal component, and the material it is made from decides how heat behaves inside the device, which decides how sustained speeds, charging rates and lifespan behave in your hands. Aluminum or plastic is a legitimate either-or, but only when both options are honest about what they do. Here is what each material actually does, and when each one is the right answer.
What the Body Does: Thermal Management
A working hub generates heat, in its power conversion circuits and its data controllers. That heat has to go somewhere, and the two materials take it somewhere different. Aluminum conducts heat roughly 100 times better than ABS plastic, which is why a well-designed aluminum shell acts as a heat sink: it pulls warmth from the components and spreads it across a larger surface, lowering the temperature at the chips themselves. Lower chip temperature means sustained transfer speeds that do not sag, charging that does not throttle, and components that age in years instead of months, the thermal logic behind our aluminum-bodied products from the MZTC1014 stand dock to the MZTC8722 drive-dock.
Plastic insulates. That is not automatically wrong: an ABS hub running light loads stays cooler than its thermal math suggests, because low-power chips make little heat to trap. But the same insulating property becomes a liability the moment a plastic-bodied hub is asked to sustain fast transfers, charge at high wattage and feed a display simultaneously. Heat accumulates where it is made, and the failure chain documented across buyer reviews, throttled speeds, dropped devices, ports that die one by one, begins with temperature.
When Plastic Is the Right Answer
Plastic earns its place in three situations. Low-power duty: a travel hub feeding a mouse, a keyboard and a flash drive makes almost no heat, and plastic serves it at lower weight and cost. Insulated environments: plastic does not conduct, which matters for certain industrial and educational contexts. And color: molded ABS takes pigments aluminum cannot, which is why the colorful MZTC1014P, in red and blue for classrooms and retail, is deliberately ABS while its aluminum sibling, the MZTC1014, serves the premium desk. Same internals, two honest materials for two honest markets.
When Aluminum Earns Its Price
Aluminum is the right answer whenever sustained load is the job: multi-device desks, NVMe storage in the chain, 100W charging passthrough, video feeds running for hours. It is also the durability answer, resisting the knocks, flexes and shelf-life of institutional use, which is why our pro-leaning products, the MZTC8722 drive-dock, the MZTC9972 card reader, the aluminum MZTC1014, are metal-bodied. The buyer's check is whether the maker treats the shell as engineering or as jewelry: an aluminum body specified as part of the thermal path, with per-port testing and aging screening behind it, is hardware. An aluminum-look finish over a thermally unplanned layout is decoration with better marketing.
The Five-Second Test at the Listing
Read the body material, then read whether the listing connects it to performance. "Aluminum shell for heat dissipation" plus published power budgets means the material is doing its job. "Aluminum" as a bullet point, next to an "up to" wattage with no conditions, means the metal is marketing. The distinction costs nothing at purchase time and everything later.
Every Mattzon product, aluminum or ABS, ships from our Shenzhen factory after per-port functional testing and aging screening, with the material chosen for its thermal job and the specifications published to prove it.
