DisplayPort vs HDMI in 2026: the Gaming Answer Is Getting Clearer
HDMI 2.2 cables are at retail and DisplayPort 2.1 is already standard, so which should a gaming PC use? The 2026 answer is clearer than the marketing.

Ask a gaming forum which display connection is better and stand back. But the question has a real answer now, and two publications drew the map this autumn. Tech-Insider's October 1 comparison put the 2026 state of play plainly: HDMI 2.2 is a finished specification whose first certified cables are already selling at retail, while DisplayPort 2.1's fastest tier, UHBR20 at 80Gbps, is already standard equipment on the monitors and graphics cards gamers actually buy. MetaPCs made the same observation from the player's side in September: for most gaming PCs, DisplayPort is the default, and the reasons hold up.
Why Gaming PCs Lean DisplayPort
The gaming PC's display chain rewards headroom today, not promises tomorrow. DisplayPort 2.1 UHBR20 delivers 80Gbps now, which buys high refresh rates at high resolutions without compression gamesmanship, and the installed base of DP 2.1-capable monitors and GPUs is already in players' hands. HDMI's answer, HDMI 2.2 with 96Gbps, is real and its first certified cables are real, as the retail arrivals this autumn show. But the HDMI 2.2-capable devices those cables are built for arrive next year. A cable standard without devices is a layaway plan; DisplayPort 2.1 is merchandise.
Where HDMI Still Rules
The symmetry holds on the console and living-room side. Consoles, televisions and media devices are HDMI territory, and HDMI 2.1's 48Gbps already carries 4K at 120Hz with the audio and control features living-room setups want. A gaming setup is often both worlds at once: the PC on DisplayPort, the console on HDMI, and the question is not which standard wins but whether each link in each chain is certified for the tier it carries. The buyer's rule stays constant across both: the certification tier and the test documentation are the evidence; the printing on the shrink wrap is decoration.
What It Means for the Cable Shelf
For retailers and distributors, the two-standard reality is a shelf-planning gift rather than a problem: DisplayPort 2.1 cables for the PC gaming aisle, certified Ultra High Speed HDMI for the console and TV aisle, and buyers who need both in one order, which is precisely how our catalog is arranged. Mattzon's cable lines cover both sides of the split, 8K-certified HDMI cables up to 48Gbps and DisplayPort 2.1 cables built for the UHBR20 generation, manufactured in our Shenzhen factory with per-unit testing, certification documentation on bulk orders, no minimum orders and 3 to 25 day lead times.
Whichever side your customers game on, the cable should be certified for the tier, not printed with the number. For certified DisplayPort 2.1 and HDMI lines, message Kitty's team on WhatsApp at +86 186 8146 2886.
