USB-C Finally Stretches: Active Optical Cables Go Mainstream
OWC's USB4 hub ships with active optical cables reaching three and five meters at a full 40Gbps. USB-C finally stretches across the room, and installs change.
One of the quiet limits of modern computing is the length of a cable. Push a USB-C connection past a couple of meters and the highest speeds start to slip away, because copper at 20 or 40 gigabits per second fights physics the whole way. That limit just moved. In a September 9, 2026 announcement covered by StreetInsider, OWC launched a USB4 hub alongside USB4 active optical cables in 3-meter and 5-meter lengths, running the full 40Gbps across a room: one USB4 cable connecting storage, an HDMI 2.1 display at 8K 60Hz, with up to 81W of charging, plus two USB4 and two 10Gbps ports on the hub.
Read that as a milestone rather than a product note. Active optical cables, AOCs, put a fiber link and tiny conversion engines inside a USB-C cable, so the signal travels as light across distance while the ends stay perfectly ordinary USB-C. The desk cable you never think about and the boardroom cable that crosses the table to the wall are now the same technology.
Why Copper Runs Out of Room
The physics is worth thirty seconds, because it explains a decade of frustration. High-frequency signals attenuate: the farther they travel in copper, the weaker and noisier they arrive, which is why full-speed passive USB-C and Thunderbolt cables live in short lengths and why the long cable on the shelf silently negotiates down to slower speeds. Every buyer who has wondered why the new dock fails on the five-meter cable that "worked yesterday" has met attenuation in person. Fiber does not have that problem at these distances, which is why the long-reach future is optical, and why active cables cost more: there is a laser and a detector hiding in each plug.
Where Long USB-C Actually Matters
The use cases cluster anywhere the computer and the work are far apart. Conference and training rooms, where the display hangs across the room and the cable run is measured in meters. Exhibition booths and events, where screens sit at the front and equipment at the back, and next week's Hong Kong Electronics Fair will be full of exactly such rigs. Classrooms, medical carts, industrial stations, industrial kitchens of screens: anywhere a fragile cable run has been hidden inside a wall because copper could not survive the distance on the outside. A 5-meter cable that holds 40Gbps, 8K video and 81W of charging turns those installs from custom engineering into a purchase order.
The Buyer's Checklist for a New Category
New category, old rule: quality spread is widest when a technology is young. An active optical cable contains precision optics, and the spread between a good one and a cheap one shows up as intermittent drops at full length, exactly the fault that is hardest to diagnose on site. Buy from suppliers who state the certification and testing behind the cable, demand test reports with samples, and test the full length at full speed before rolling it into an install, the same discipline we apply to every cable that leaves our Shenzhen factory, where CE, FCC and RoHS certification and test documentation ship with bulk orders as standard.
The desk went wireless at the edges and wired at the core. Now the core finally stretches across the room at fiber speeds, and the cable industry, our industry, is the one holding the spool.
